Mental wellness is a term that we often hear more and more as we grow up. In our early stages of life, we are carefree and don’t even know that mental stress exists. As we continue to grow in life, we encounter situations that gradually start causing us mental stress. As we mature, we realize that mental stress is real, and it’s important to take care of our mental health.
When I Realized About Mental Stress
I’m a very chill kinda guy who just does his job and does what he feels. I’ve been employed for almost 2 years now. Earlier, I did my BCA and was very tension free with life. I used to go out, explore places around, spend time with my friends, and just enjoy life.
As the final year kept approaching, I started getting stressed about my exams. But for me, the main problem was backlogs. I got 2 every semester. Yeah, that sounds crazy! I’ve even posted a blog on this — ‘From 2 Compartments Per Semester to Clearing Every Job Interview’.
I knew that I couldn’t land a job if I didn’t start taking things seriously. That’s when real mental stress enters your life. You actually start thinking seriously about your career. You contemplate your life and your future.
My biggest advice? Find a purpose.
A purpose that motivates you to keep doing more. You can either be in mental stress thinking about your future, or you can actually do something about it.
You don’t need to do everything at once. You can start slow, take your own sweet time to build up that momentum. Once you’ve left for the journey, you just need to relax. Don’t overstress about things. Take small steps to make things better. Don’t rush. Follow your intuitions.
So, Why Do People Often Ignore Mental Wellness?
Now let’s get to the real question, why do people ignore mental wellness in the first place?
Here’s what I feel:
1. Lack of Awareness
Most people don’t even know what mental wellness really means. They think being sad or stressed sometimes is just a part of life. They believe there’s nothing they can do about it. Many don’t even recognize the signs until it gets too late. In countries like India, awareness around mental health is still growing. However, we’ve got a long way to go.
2. Society Doesn’t Talk About It Enough
Let’s be honest, people still hesitate to talk openly about their mental health. We’re taught to “be strong” and “deal with it silently.” Sharing your problems is often seen as being weak. That’s not right. Talking about your feelings should never be a problem. In fact, it’s the first step toward healing.
3. Fear of Being Judged
People fear being judged. They don’t want others to think they are mentally unstable or weak. But the truth is everyone goes through ups and downs. Everyone faces anxiety, fear, and confusion at some point. It’s absolutely okay to not feel okay.
4. Busy Lifestyle, No Time to Think
Today, everyone’s running after something, money, success, stability, or dreams. In the middle of all this, people often forget to pause and check in with their own minds. Physical health still gets some attention, but mental health? It gets pushed to the side.
5. We Think We Can Handle It Alone
This one is personal for many. Most people, especially young adults, think “I can handle this on my own.” While it’s good to be independent, there’s no shame in asking for help. Talking to a friend, a therapist, or even journaling your thoughts can make a huge difference.

What Can We Do?
Start with small things that bring you peace. It doesn’t have to be big. Maybe listen to your favorite music. Go for a walk. Watch the sunset. Spend time with your loved ones. Or simply sip coffee in silence.
Mental wellness isn’t about having no stress at all , it’s about learning how to manage it.
Take care of your mind just like you take care of your body. Rest when you need to. Talk when you feel like you’re losing control. Don’t bottle things up.
Most importantly, be kind to yourself.
Let’s normalize checking in on our mental health just like we check our phones every morning. If you’re reading this, take a moment today for yourself. You deserve peace, and you deserve clarity.
