Comfort zone is, as the name suggests, a zone of comfort. It is a place where we feel safe, secure, and content. A place where we feel like, “This is all I want right now.” While comfort is not a bad thing, staying in that zone for too long can prevent growth. There are many moments in life when we have to step out of our comfort zone. Stepping out is very important.
Everyday examples of staying in our comfort zone often include hesitating to talk to a stranger. They also include delaying waking up early. Lastly, avoiding difficult conversations is common. These may seem small, but they add up. I started understanding the importance of time. I also realized how crucial it is to do things we usually hesitate to do. Let me share a few examples from my personal life. I’ll explain what I learned from them. You’ll see why stepping out of my comfort zone mattered.
Facing My Fear of Public Speaking
Back in my school days, I had a lot of stage fear. To be honest, I still have some of it. But earlier, my legs used to shake even at the thought of speaking in front of a crowd. I never participated in any stage events.
Fast forward to today, I have been working for almost two years. During this time, I faced several situations where I had to step out of my comfort zone. Those decisions have made me truly happy.
One such moment was during my school’s alumni meet. I was visiting after five years. It felt great to meet my old friends. I also thanked my teachers for all they had taught me. As part of the function, every alumnus was called on stage to receive a gift. It was optional to speak a few words.
In my mind, I had already decided I wanted to say something. My turn came. I walked up, received the gift, and chose to speak. I wanted to because I never had the courage to do so during school. But as soon as I started, I got nervous. I said, “I recently passed out,” even though I had actually passed out five years ago. That slip made me feel embarrassed. My speech was not as impactful as I had imagined.
Still, that day made me happy. Why? Because I stepped out of my comfort zone. I have stayed silent like others, but I would not have felt satisfied. Taking that small step gave me confidence. Now I know that if I get a chance again, I will be calm. I will speak more confidently.
Taking Control of My Health
Another example comes from my fitness journey. I am an overweight person, and I am currently working hard to shed that extra weight. Earlier, I thought that getting a job would allow me time to work out. I also expected it to help me eat properly and manage my lifestyle. But when I actually started working, that idea vanished quickly.
My office is 20 kilometers away from where I live. It takes me about 45 minutes to travel one way. I usually wake up at 7:30 in the morning, leave home by 8:10, and reach the office by 9. My shift ends at 6:30 in the evening, and I reach home around 7:30, depending on traffic.
In the beginning, I had no energy left to even think about working out. I only had enough time for dinner, talking to my parents, taking a bath, and then going straight to bed. It felt impossible to stay motivated after such a tiring day.
But deep down, I knew it was important. So I made up my mind to start again. It took me around five to six months to get back to working out. I was still getting used to office life, but eventually, I figured out a way. Today, I work out for about one and a half hours after office. My daily routine is the same as before, but I added fitness to it. It was difficult, but I decided to step out of my comfort zone once again.
And honestly, I do not regret it at all. In fact, I feel proud of that decision every day.
Why You Should Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Every time you push yourself outside your comfort zone, you grow. Speaking on stage shapes you. Working out after a long day shapes you. Doing anything that feels challenging shapes you. They contribute to your growth. They give you confidence, self-belief, and a sense of purpose.
Now, I actively seek out situations that require me to stretch myself. It feels amazing to do things that once scared me. My best advice is this — always say yes to opportunities that lie outside your comfort zone. If something makes you nervous, it is probably the exact thing you should be doing.
Go and do that thing. Make it your comfort zone. You will feel more in control of your life, and you will definitely feel proud of yourself.
