9 Hours Work, 2 Hours Travel: How Do I Still Go for a 1.5 Hour Workout?

This blog means a lot to me because the topic actually excites me. When I first started working, I thought there was no way I could fit the gym into my routine. My days felt packed, and my energy was always low after work and travel. Over time, I found a way to make it happen. Now I want to share that story with you.

My Daily Routine

Let me start by explaining my day. I wake up around 7:30 in the morning. By 8:15, I am ready to leave for work. I have already completed all the basic things like brushing, bathing, and getting dressed.

My office is about 20 kilometers away. I drive there and usually reach by 9:00 or 9:15, depending on traffic. My shift ends at 6:00 in the evening. I leave the office around 6 and reach home by 6:45 if the traffic is normal.

This is how my schedule looks now. But it wasn’t always like this.

In the Beginning, It Felt Impossible

When I had just started working, sitting from 9 to 6 felt very difficult. I was someone who used to move around freely and never stayed in one place for long. The idea of sitting in one spot for the whole day was hard for me to accept.

To make things harder, my previous job had longer hours. I used to get off work at 6:30 and reach home around 7:30 in the evening. By then, I was too tired to even think about working out.

At that point, I had no energy left. I would eat dinner and just lie down. But deep inside, I knew I could not continue like this forever. Something had to change.

Taking the First Step

I gave myself time to settle into the work and travel routine. After about 6 or 7 months, I finally joined a gym. That was my first step, and even though it took a while, I was proud of myself for starting.

At first, I had a hard time choosing when to work out. Should I go in the morning or evening? I decided to try morning workouts.

Trying Morning Workouts

To make it to the gym in the morning, I had to wake up at 5:50. I reached the gym by 6:10, worked out, and came back home by 7:30 to get ready for work.

This plan worked for some time. But slowly, problems started to appear. Some days I could not wake up. Other days, even if I did wake up, I felt too tired to go. My sleep was not good, so my body was not getting enough rest.

Also, my workout partners, who were my brother and his friend, stopped coming. After some time, they quit going to the gym completely. I was left alone, and it started to affect my motivation.

Since the beginning of my fitness journey, I had always worked out or played sports like basketball with friends. I always had someone with me. So working out alone felt strange and boring. It was also tough because I had just moved to a new city for this job, and everything was unfamiliar.

Switching to Evening Workouts

After trying for some time, I changed my workout time to the evening. I would come home from work, take a short break, and then go to the gym. This change worked really well for me.

I no longer had to wake up super early, and I felt a little more rested. In my old job, I would reach home by 7:30. I would rest a bit, then go to the gym by 8:00. I would come back around 9:30. After that, I would shower, eat dinner, talk to my parents, and sleep.

This routine worked, except on days when traffic was really bad. Sometimes I would reach home by 8:00 or even 8:20. On those days, I had no time to rest, and that was frustrating. But I still managed to go to the gym.

A Small Change Made a Big Difference

A few months ago, I changed companies. My new job ends 30 minutes earlier than the last one. That small change made a big difference. Now I leave work at 6:00 and reach home by 6:45. I get a full hour to rest before going to the gym.

That extra time may not seem like much, but it really helped me. I feel more relaxed and ready when I go to work out. I can now enjoy my workouts both physically and mentally.

Lessons I Have Learned

As I grow older, I feel like life keeps teaching me the same lessons. Discipline, time management, and consistency. I have learned that if something matters to you, you have to make time for it.

I started thinking about the gym the same way I think about my job. I don’t ask myself if I feel like going. I just go. That’s how it became a habit.

What I Want You to Remember

Here is my advice to you. Do the things you keep thinking about. We often say things like “I’ll start working out next month” or “I’ll start saving money soon.” But most of the time, those plans stay in our heads and never turn into actions.

Sometimes, you need to remind yourself how long it has been. I used to tell myself, “It’s been 5 months. You still haven’t worked out.” That guilt helped push me to take action.

Final Thoughts

No matter how busy life gets, it is possible to make time for the things that matter. You do not need to feel motivated every day. You just need to show up. Even on the days you feel tired. Even on the days you do not want to.

That is how real change begins. keep following Just Advice for more blogs like this. Comment section is open to all your advice.
